Jeff Murugan

2025 Executive Committee of Convocation Nominee

By way of brief nomination, Prof Murugan has been connected to the University of Cape Town since his first day on campus as an undergrad in 1994. While he took time to study and train abroad in the UK and the USA, he returned to UCT with the goal of contributing with care and commitment to the science and education sectors of South Africa through his Alma Mater, UCT. For over 30 years now he has maintained his commitment to the university, serving at every level of university leadership to date, departmental, faculty and finally as part of the executive over the last 2 years. Leadership seems to seek him out, and as someone who cares deeply for the wellbeing of our students and all of our staff, I know that he will serve the Convocation with care and the due diligence required for the role. Aside from his role as a leader at UCT, Prof Murugan is an internationally renowned Mathematical Physicist and an awardee of UCT's most coveted teaching prize - the Distinguished Teachers Award as well as being amongst UCT's most selective academic group, the College of Fellows. He is an innovator in every sphere of University life and has represented the very best of what it means to be a UCT Alumnus.

Yours sincerely

Amanda Weltman (BSc 1999, BSc Hons 2000)
