More than 160 UCT alumni, donors and friends gathered at the House of Lords for the annual UCT UK Trust Reception.

UCT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mosa Moshabela, addressed the audience, focusing on UCT’s Strategy 2030, with specific emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship – the fourth mission of the strategy. Keynote speaker, Professor Anthony Figaji, gave the audience insight into the work of African Brain Child (ABC). As Head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at UCT and Red Cross Memorial Children’s Hospital, Prof. Figaji outlined the scale of the challenge facing children with brain injuries and diseases, and the extraordinary potential of ABC’s research to transform outcomes in Africa and globally. His message was clear: the opportunity — and the need — is significant.

The room was alive with conversation throughout the evening, with new relationships forming and long-standing ties renewed. Many attendees commented on the strong sense of purpose that emerged as the community reflected on UCT’s role in driving impactful, globally relevant research.

Those inspired by Professor Figaji’s remarks were invited to support the ABC team’s work, with the assurance that their contributions would directly strengthen the team’s ability to accelerate this vital research.

The evening also included a special moment for Mrs Anne Page, a BA graduate of the Class of1958). Page was scheduled to travel to UCT earlier this year to participate in the annual Golden Graduation — a ceremony honouring alumni who graduated at least 50 years ago — but was unable to make the trip. Instead, we brought Golden Graduation to her. The Vice-Chancellor personally presenting Page with her golden scarf, and she was deeply appreciative that her milestone was recognised in this way.

Guests at the gathering were treated to a taste of home, thanks to the generous support of UCT alumnus and acclaimed winemaker Bruce Jack. An internationally recognised figure in the wine industry, Bruce provided a selection of premium South African wines that showcased the exceptional quality and character of the country's vineyards. The winery has been featured on The World's Most Admired Wine Brands list on six occasions including 2026, reflecting its global reputation for excellence. His contribution added a distinctly South African flavour to the evening and was greatly appreciated by all in attendance.
