Hamied Mazema
Hamied Mazema graduated with a BSc in Chemical Engineering from UCT in 1974 and retired after a distinguished career spanning myriad of industries, government, and international consultancy. He held senior positions at AECI and SANS, served as Head and Principal Engineer for Water Pollution Control for the City of Cape Town, and worked for the CSIR and the Water Research Commission.
His global experience includes the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship at Rutgers University (USA), a secondment to ICI (UK), and project work with UNIDO, USAID, and DANIDA. A lifelong advocate for improved water pollution control and waste management, Hamied is equally passionate about mentoring young engineers. He actively supports UCT students and those from other institutions of higher learning through the Student Support & Strategy Foundation, guiding them throughout their studies. He has been assisting engineering graduates toward registration as Professional Engineers with ECSA and IChemE (UK) for the past 12 years.
Hamied has contributed extensively to professional bodies including SAIChE, IWMSA, the WRC (SA), and IChemE (UK). He brings deep technical expertise, a commitment to environmental responsibility, and a strong dedication to professional development to the Committee of Convocation. He also served on the UCT Alumni Board before.
