Ikey Tigers – 2025 Varsity Cup Champions

The Ikey Tigers put on an epic gladiator-style performance to end an 11-year title drought, being crowned the FNB Varsity Cup 2025 champions. In what was a thrilling final, the Ikeys outplayed the hosts, running the Maties ragged and the boys in blue and white beat the maroon machine in emphatic style with a definitive 44-21 victory.

This win marks the third time that the Ikey Tigers have won the trophy, a proud addition to the titles first earned in 2011 and 2014. After having been in the final nine times previously, and losing by a very narrow margin in 2023 and 2024, the team had a real hunger to win. The team spirit, teamwork, unity and hard work were reflected in the players digging deep and giving the game their all, as they played for each other and their community. Their team commitment, talent and experience shone through during the match.

The Danie Craven stadium was packed to capacity and despite not having the home-crowd advantage, the Ikeys displayed sublime skills, excellent running and a relentless attack on the Maties.

Keagan Blanckenberg’s stellar performance on the night earned him the FNB Player that Rocks title for the game. Winger Ntokozo Makhaza displayed his prowess, scoring two tries, four penalties and four conversions, his powerful boot allowing him to claim 32 of the points of the night. Ntokozo claimed the FNB SA Overall Player that Rocks award, for the second year in a row. He also bagged the FNB Back That Rocks award.
There was great jubilation from the Ikeys supporters at this historic moment, where the team made the entire UCT community proud.
