Student Wellness
At the University of Cape Town, holistic student development is a key priority, as achieving academic goals is closely linked to a healthy lifestyle. The Student Wellness Service (SWS) promotes this value through a range of interventions delivered by a professional team comprising medical practitioners, psychiatrists, nurses, a social worker, and psychologists. This dedicated team supports students in adopting healthy living practices and making life choices that enhance their overall well-being.
While SWS has become an indispensable part of student support at UCT, the growing student population and increasingly diverse needs require a more robust level of primary health care. This includes culturally sensitive care approaches that incorporate holistic healing therapies.
Mental health remains a particular concern, given the demanding academic workload, tight schedules, and the stress associated with a politically transitioning environment. To address these challenges, SWS has expanded its services to include a 24/7 crisis care line, on-site crisis intervention after hours, on weekends, and public holidays, as well as psychologists with lived experience of previous disadvantage. Additionally, there is a pressing need to increase the number of doctors and nurses to manage physical health concerns, especially for students living in residence and those reliant on bursary support.
Looking ahead, the Student Wellness Service seeks to establish a sustainable, long- term on-campus facility grounded in the principles of Primary Health Care, with an integrated focus on health promotion, disease prevention, curative care, and mental health support. The growing demand for accessible, comprehensive health and mental-health services underscores the central role in enbabling student wellbeing, academic engagement, and overall student success. The annual operational budget required to sustain this essential service is estimated at ZAR 3,800,000.
