Accolades across the globe for UCT staff

UCT staff continue to earn prestigious accolades both nationally and globally, some of which are highlighted here:

Emerita Professor Valerie Mizrahi
  • Emerita Professor Valerie Mizrahi was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences – joining the company of notable members including John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein.
  • Emerita Professor Estelle (Vicki) Lambert, Honorary Professor Crick Lund, Professor Dan Stein as well as Associate Professor Darren Martin were named on the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers List for 2024, placing them among the top 1% of most-cited researchers in their fields over the past decade, according to Web of Science.
  • Professor Tanja Bosch has been appointed the DSI/NRF SARChI SA-UK Bilateral Chair in Digital Media Sociology,
  • Professor Keertan Dheda has been appointed the UCT/NRF SARChI Chair in Interrupting Antimicrobial Resistance Amplification.  
  • Professor Kelly Chibale has been conferred an honorary fellowship by Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, research and innovation in the field of drug 11 discovery. This achievement follows his recent election as an international member of the esteemed United States National Academy of Medicine (NAM) for pioneering infectious disease drug discovery on the African continent.
  • Dr Lisa October, Dr Rešoketšwe Manenzhe and Professor Corin from the Centre for Minerals Research (CMR), formed the UCT team and in collaboration with Finnish global industry leader in minerals processing, Metso, were awarded the prestigious Mining Innovation and Research Battlefield prize at the Mining Indaba. At the heart of their innovation is a water recycling system that enhances mineral recovery in mining while significantly reducing waste – potentially even eliminating wastewater altogether.
